THE GROUNDS AND THE POOL
The grounds of Porter’s Great House are so incredibly impressive; they warrant a special mention. It is possible to spend one's entire vacation exploring the 23 acres and each day discover something new and exciting. The entrance is imposing with a winding road that is flanked on both sides by and an enchanting forest of ancient mahogany trees. The focal point of the gardens is the enormous rolling lawn leading up to an Italian style folly at the top. To the north of the property there is a fernery and beyond that is the original Porter’s sugar factory. Beside the factory is a mill wall which was initially the mill used to grind corn.
The whole garden is full of tropical shrubs and flowers, creating a profusion of color and sweet tropical smells. If you look carefully, you are likely to spot birds of paradise frolicking around the garden. There are too many species of trees to mention them all. However, some of the most interesting is the Bauhinia Tree or Orchid Tree, Flamboyant and Shakshak trees.
A striking neo-classical pavilion is the location for the beautiful swimming pool. The original pool dated back to the 18th century and was one of the first to be built on the island of Barbados. Today it is a beautiful serene area with a lovely gazebo and places for outdoor dining and relaxation.
There is even a chapel in the gardens which has a statue of Francis of Assisi placed in a niche in the wall. There are so many nooks and crannies and exciting spots to explore that one will undoubtedly have the feeling of exploring a secret garden from a time in history.
THE HISTORY
Porters Great House is one of the most historically impressive Plantation Houses on the island of Barbados. The big difference is the others are open to the public while Porter’s House is only available to the lucky guests who rent the lovely Porters Villa.
Built-in 1660, the original Porters Plantation hose was owned by William Porter hence the name. In the 1720’s it was passed to the Honourable Dudley Woodbridge who was head of the Royal Africa Company. During the 18th Century, the house was owned by the Alleyne Family until 1949 when it was bought by Murtogh D Guinness who was from the famous Guinness brewing factory.
Over the years, Porters Great House underwent two major renovations and in 2019, the Porters Villa opened following a complete renovation.
